Optical illusions & the art of seeing

Explore optical illusions, impossible objects and illusion art with pictures, viewing instructions and explanations. Follow the science and history behind each example, from classic visual puzzles to fractals and camouflage in nature and human design.

Two equal center circles, one surrounded by larger circles and one by smaller circles.

Ebbinghaus circles

Traditionally Hermann Ebbinghaus; popularized by E. B. Titchener

The neighbors change the size of the circle you see.

A pavement painting of a waterfall and deep chasm, with a person positioned inside its apparent space.

Waterfall Street Painting

Manfred Stader, a German street artist

You should have the visual experience of a person seeming to crouch on a rock on top of a waterfall. However, although the person is real, the waterfall is just a cleverly constructed 2D…

Original illustration of an infinity LED mirror with nested glowing rings and a side-view inset showing LEDs between a rear mirror and a partially reflective front panel.

Infinity LED mirror

Multiple-reflection principle; contemporary LED designs by many makers

A shallow frame seems to contain a deep tunnel of lights. A single row of LEDs becomes a chain of reflections that fades into the distance.

Wireframe cube with all twelve edges visible and no shading.

Necker cube

Louis Albert Necker

Which face is in front? A wireframe refuses to decide.

Checker shadow

Edward H. Adelson

Two squares. One shade of gray. A shadow changes everything.

Overlapping black polygonal rings form the scintillating starburst pattern around a white centre.

Scintillating Starburst

This illusion was introduced to the academic literature in a publication by Karlovich & Wallisch in 2021. This illusion is also sometimes referred to as the "Sunray illusion" because it is reminiscent of sunlight breaking through the clouds. The illusion was originally created by Michael Karlovich in 2019 while designing a logo for his start-up company, Recursia Studios. Author credit: Karlovich, MW & Wallisch, P (2023).

Bright lines will appear to be coming from the centre. If you look at them directly, you will realise that they are not actually there.

Two equal line segments ending in oppositely oriented arrow fins.

Müller–Lyer

Franz Carl Müller-Lyer

Matching line lengths, mismatched appearances.

Waterfall Illusion

Robert Addams popularised the illusion in 19th century; but it was known much before.

You should experience the dots in the test pattern as moving - even though they are stationary.
